Fear
I am Fear
Darkness is all around me,
Waiting for the next light burst in the jungle,
Will it be me?
Seeing the blood flow around my boot, is it old or new?
Is it me or my ally?
Looking into the faces of my friends, unsure of their thoughts,
Sweat running off my face confuses me, putting me on edge,
The racket of the munitions echoes off the valley walls,
Howls from injuries fill my ears with anxiety,
Will we live through the night?
I miss home,
The hum of thousands of wings is constant,
Making me agitated but I can’t move,
I feel the caked-on blood of my friends on my hands,
Driving the mosquitos to my body for a meal,
The grab of my boot from the muddy water is strong,
As I take constant steps toward my enemy,
The feel of the machine gun belt weighing me down deeper into the mud
Making me an easier target
The feel of the heat flash when the person next to you steps on a mine and it is all over
I am Fear
Commentary: This was my favorite poem that I have done. This poem took me 30 minutes to write.
